The Case for a US Science Laureate

We have a Poet Laureate whose task it to convey the joy and meaning of poetry to the "masses". I believe we should have a Science Laureate as well.

Few people advanced the cause of science more than Carl Sagan when he was alive because he was able to reach the average person with both the substance and the universal - and yes spiritual - joy of science. Sagan's are big shoes to fill but there are people out there who can make a run at it. The country would benefit immensely from just such a person whose intellect could be marshalled toward both imparting the joy of science generally and also bridging the divide on some of the more controversial issues of the day - like climate change.

States too could have their own Science Laureate. As with Poet Laureates the position could simply be an honorary one without the need to have a salaried person.

I don't know if this idea is original with you, but it's brilliant. Keep me in mind if you pursue this in some more public way, I'll be happy to add my voice to the cause!
